Knowledge of English in the 21st century
Philologists have every reason to grumble, they say, it is not at all necessary to litter the Russian language with all these borrowings: marketers, realtors, dealers, and even more so franchises and distributors. There are Russian words that reflect the same concepts. But it is not only the Russian language that breaks down under the pressure of Americanisms. The Germans, who have long resisted foreign influence, are happy to interrupt for coffee breaks, upsetting the translators of the German language with unexpected interspersing of English words in their speech. The French, who until recently stubbornly rejected all requests from foreign partners to submit documentation in English, also surrendered. And the new generation of French people are already fluent in English. Where are you going to go? Esperanto has not caught on. If you want to be understood, speak English.
The desire of a Russian person to show his abilities to the maximum is completely understandable, especially since he was deprived of such an opportunity for too long. And it is just wonderful that professionals - engineers, doctors, programmers, etc. - got the opportunity to read special literature in the original language and communicate with their colleagues from abroad without an interpreter. At times, such actions are not only justified, but also inevitable if there is no translator at hand. But this is what this profession is for - a translator, to provide people with understanding. For people who do not speak a foreign language fluently - and there are still the majority of them in Russia - it is difficult to think simultaneously about WHAT TO SAY and HOW TO FORMULATE IT IN ANOTHER LANGUAGE. But they are trying. Sometimes it's not very clear. As a result, a European who politely smiled during all negotiations can whisper to the translator during the break: "Explain, please, what they were talking about here. It seems to them that they speak English, but it is inconvenient for me to ask again."
Representatives of foreign companies traveling all over the world perfectly understand the functions of a translator and poetically call them "angels of communication". The way it is. An interpreter accompanying a foreigner, even more so if he arrived in our country for the first time, is forced not only to translate, but sometimes also to explain some of the subtleties, including linguistic ones. In particular, I will return to the aforementioned borrowings.
“But our managers are working in this room,” an employee of a Russian firm proclaims and opens the door. Instinctively straightening ties and pulling in their tummies, foreign businessmen are confident that they will now be presented to the board of directors, and when they see young elegant girls, they are amazed at the picture that has presented themselves to their eyes, and then turn inquiringly to the translator. I have to explain that in the Russian language the word manager (from manager - the head), has received a completely different meaning. Most often, this is the name of coordinators, secretaries, even couriers. It seems to sound more solid. Although what is bad about the word "secretary"? In England the word "secretary" means "minister". But such minor misunderstandings are easily resolved. But what about the more serious issues on which the signing of a lucrative contract depends? It is more difficult to do without a translator here. It's good if you managed to "grow one in your own team." If you have a specialist who knows equally well both the essence of the issue and the terms used in this industry, and maybe even personally acquainted with permanent foreign partners, then you are just in luck. He must be cared for and cherished. But, most likely, with such a formulation of the case, you will not read this site.
If it makes no sense for your company to create such a position, and translation services are required only from time to time, then you have a direct road to a translation agency. In those old days, when foreign trade was a state monopoly, the rules for negotiating were very strict. It is not forbidden if the leaders of both contracting parties say hello and ask each other about family and health without an interpreter. And then - the protocol. The representative of one side asked, the translator translated, the representative of the other side answered, the translator translated, and so on. Violators of the protocol were punished.
Now many people are engaged in business. And everyone speaks English. Or, as mentioned above, they think what they say. As for the protocol, very few people remember it. It happens that people who have not seen each other for a long time come to negotiations, and, forgetting about foreign guests, they talk for a long time with each other. Having spoken, they can try to demonstrate their linguistic abilities, and not always on the topic of negotiations. This impression is not always favorable. But, unfortunately, translators find themselves in such situations more and more often. In the translation profession, there are cases when customers focus on a specific topic. There are specialists for this.
Experienced foreign businessmen are well aware of this, who necessarily provide materials of their presentations or lectures in advance, ask the translator to come half an hour early to answer possible questions, and sometimes it is just necessary to talk to each other for ten to fifteen minutes in order to get used to the manner of a specific speaker. Happiness if the guest is from Holland, Denmark or Norway. English is not their native language, but the level of teaching is the highest, and the result is appropriate. What if it's an Englishman from Manchester, where they say "but" and "cut" instead of "baht" and "kat". Or from India? Or China? This requires at least a minimum adaptation period.
I have no doubt that your company is interested in positively positioning its image, or, translating into your native language, you want foreign partners to see you as a serious company, which you, of course, are.
